Eric Isom worked for the Utah State Senate from January 2000 to January 2004 and handled media relations and public affairs. He advised the Senate President and majority leadership on media and legislative issues for sessions and Interims, drafted speaking points and surveys and tracked public opinion. The Senate Presidents with whom Isom served include Lane Beattie, Interim Senate President Lyle Hillyard and Al Mansell. Over four legislative sessions, Isom enjoyed a front row seat of the process, including its timing, Executive Branch interactions, the various stakeholders, mediations and strategies.
Isom was hired in 2004 as the Qwest government affairs director. After nearly 12 years working at the local, state and federal government levels on legislation, regulations and facility deployments, Isom left CenturyLink as assistant vice president for Utah public policy to partner with Steve Mecham and Steve Barth at MIB Partners. Isom’s primary responsibility for Qwest/CenturyLink was to coordinate all lobbying activities before the Utah State Legislature.
Additionally, Isom worked with the Utah congressional delegation and Utah executive branch on legislation, regulations or rules. He worked closely with the administrations of Governors Mike Leavitt, Jon Huntsman and Gary Herbert. Isom’s personal interaction with Governor Herbert goes back more than 20 years to Herbert’s service as a Utah County Commissioner.
Isom organized utility and industry coalitions and interfaced with local governments on ordinances, franchises, rights-of-way, bonding, insurance, service needs, facility deployments and relocations. In addition to speaking before the Legislature, Isom addressed chambers of commerce, city councils, planning commissions and other elected and official bodies on behalf of Qwest/CenturyLink.
He interacted regularly with UDOT and local governments on road projects and the relocation of facilities. This collaboration ultimately resulted in legislation passed in 2010 to improve the communication and coordination between utilities and government entities for public highway projects and the relocation of utility facilities. Isom also worked to resolve a public utility easement issue between utilities and UDOT with legislation passed in 2014.
Through the years, Isom communicated consistently with CenturyLink Network employees and UDOT officials, including Carlos Braceras, Linda Toy Hull, Lynne Yocom and Richard Manser, to address legislation, project concerns, statewide utility agreements, infrastructure trades and the relocation of facilities.
His participation on the Salt Lake, Davis and Ogden/Weber Chamber Boards and other chamber committees, has provided opportunities to associate with UTA representatives including Michael Allegra, Matt Sibul, Dave Kallas and Kent Jorgenson. Transportation, including transit service, is an annual focus of Utah chambers. Isom currently serves as chair of the Ogden/Weber Chamber Legislative Affairs Committee and previously chaired the Davis Chamber Legislative Affairs Committee and Davis Chamber Transportation Subcommittee where he interacted regularly with Davis County Commissioners, UTA and UDOT representatives on transportation and transit projects. He continues to participate with both Davis Chamber entities. Isom additionally serves on the Northern Utah Chamber Coalition (NUCC).
